Sound like you? You won’t be the only one!

Canopies have become very popular. Which is understandable. A canopy on your shed can provide you with a lot of benefits.

For example, installing a canopy on your hay shed is a cost-effective way to get more hay undercover.

And a canopy on a machinery shed or workshop allows wide machinery to be easily driven in undercover.

That’s just to name a few of the advantages!

So, you’re sold on the idea of a canopy for your shed. But how much does it cost?

In this article our building consultants answer exactly that question.

Read on to learn about shed canopies and how much they cost.

Can You Retrofit A Canopy? How Much Does It Cost To Retrofit A Canopy?

If you aren’t sure if you would find a canopy beneficial, we can make provision when manufacturing your shed for adding a canopy in the future.

This may involve upsizing the columns so that they can bear the additional load. We may also need to increase the depth of the footings depending on the shed size and design.

All you need to do is make mention of this to one our building consultants to ensure it is incorporated in the design stage.

So, if you have taken this step in the design stage of your shed project, retrofitting a canopy to your shed is straightforward.

However, if you haven’t made this allowance, you may be limited as to how big a canopy you can retrofit.

Depending on the size of the existing shed you may be able to go as wide as 6 metres, however we need to look at this on a job-by-job basis

Or, if you existing shed is not an Action Steel shed, we may need to refer you to your local steel fabrication business due to the complexities in engineering.

What Is The Most Cost-Effective Canopy Size?

Some canopy sizes are more cost-effective than others.

For example, an 8-metre canopy usually costs less per-square-metre than a 6-metre canopy.

This is because any canopy up to 6 metres we fabricate with a UB rafter. When the canopy is wider than 6 metres though, we need to exchange the UB rafter to an RHS truss to give it the additional strength it requires.

While there may be a little more fabrication time in welding up the truss option, the materials weigh less overall. And, when you buy steel and when you get it galvanized you pay per tonne, so this makes the RHS truss option the more cost-effective way to build a canopy.

What Size Canopy Can You Build?

While 8 metres is the most cost-effective size for a canopy, we can do any canopy size from as small as you like up to (and beyond) 12 metres!
