Hay Shed Kit Sizes

Let’s get started!

9 Of The Best Hay Shed Kit Sizes (& Price List)

Below we have listed nine of the best hay shed kit sizes available.

These are all popular options because they are cost-effective, practical and can be easily customised.

There are other sizes available if you are looking for a slightly different size for your hay shed project. Our building consultants are always happy to provide advice on different sizes and cost-per-bale prices to help you establish which will be the most cost-effective option for your hay storage.

1. An 18m (W) x 32m (L) x 6m (H) Hay Shed Kit

This hay shed kit size is one of the most popular sizes for smaller-scale storage and is commonly used in livestock enterprises for storing hay for fodder.

The design consists of four 8-metre bay spacings which allow three big square bales to be stacked between the columns.

The height of 6 metres allows you to stack six big square bales high which works well if you load your shed with a front-end loader. You could consider increasing the height of the shed if you have the equipment available to safely stack more than six bales high.

Now for the important information.

How much does the shed store? And how much does it cost?

Capacity

An 18m (W) x 32m (L) x 6m (H) hay shed stores approx. 1,008 big square bales.

If you choose to upsize the height to 6.75m high, stacking seven big square bales high the shed will store an additional 168 bales.

A height of 7.5 metres would allow you to stack eight bales high. This would increase the storage capacity by 336 bales with a total capacity of approx. 1344 bales.

Increasing the height of a shed is often a cost-effective way to gain more storage, so this could be an option for you. Another way you could do this is by installing a canopy.

Cost

An 18m (W) x 32m (L) x 6m (H) hay shed kit will cost approx. $90,000 – $120,000 including GST.

This works out to be approx. $90 – $120 per bale.

Please note this indicative price is for a three-sided configuration and includes GST,  delivery, footing concrete and installation.

If you were looking at ways to save money on your project, a popular option is to install cladding on just one or two of the walls, rather than the recommended open-front configuration.

2. A 24m (W) x 34m (L) x 7.5m (H) Hay Shed Kit

This size hay shed kit has become popular in recent years as large bay spacings become more common.

Like the 8-metre bay spacings, the 8.5-metre bay spacings allow three big square bales to be stacked between the columns.

While an 8.5-metre bay spacing doesn’t increase the capacity of the shed, the advantage is improved air movement between the stacks. The extra width also provides a bit more ‘wriggle room’ which makes loading and unloading the shed easier and less stressful.

The 7.5-metre height allows you to stack eight bales high with a telehandler.

Capacity

A 24m (W) x 34m (L) x 7.5m (H) hay shed stores approx. 1,820 big square bales.

Cost

A 24m (W) x 34m (L) x 7.5m (H) hay shed will cost approx. $130,000 – $160,000 including GST.

This works out to be approx. $70 – $90 per bale.

Please note this indicative price is for a three-sided configuration and includes GST,  delivery, footing concrete and installation.

3. A 24m (W) x 42.5m (L) x 7.5m (H) Hay Shed Kit

This hay shed kit size incorporates 8.5-metre bay spacings and in recent years has been as popular as the 24m (W) x 42m (L) x 7.5m (H)  hay shed kit with 8-metre bay spacings.

This reflects the general trend of bigger sheds and helps make loading and unloading hay sheds both safer and more time efficient.

A cantilevered canopy is a common addition to this size hay shed.

Capacity

A 24m (W) x 42.5m (L) x 7.5m (H) hay shed stores approx. 2,280 big square bales.

Cost

A 24m (W) x 42.5m (L) x 7.5m (H) hay shed kit will cost approx. $160,000 – $190,000 including GST.

This works out to be approx. $70 – $85 per bale.

Please note this indicative price is for a three-sided configuration and includes GST, delivery, footing concrete and installation.

4. A 24m (W) x 48m (L) x 7.5m (H) Hay Shed Kit

One of our original standard hay shed sizes, this hay shed kit is a tried and tested size. It’s arguably one of the most popular kit shed sizes.

This shed kit is commonly customised with a cantilevered canopy and used for machinery storage.

If you are likely to use your hay shed for machinery storage at some point, you may prefer to upsize the bay spacings to 8.5 metres to gain a bit more room when loading and unloading the shed. 9-metre bays are also becoming popular for machinery storage.

Otherwise, this hay shed kit is an excellent option just as it is.

Capacity

A 24m (W) x 48m (L) x 7.5m (H) hay shed will store approx. 2,730 big square bales.

Cost

A 24m (W) x 48m (L) x 7.5m (H) hay shed kit will cost approx. $180,000 – $210,000 including GST.

This works out to be approx. $65 – $75 per bale

Please note this indicative price is for a three-sided configuration and includes GST,  delivery, footing concrete and installation.

5. A 24m (W) x 64m (L) x 7.5m (H) Hay Shed Kit

This is another classic hay shed size and it has proven to be a cost-effective storage for large-scale farming operations.

Some clients that require large-scale storage have opted to build multiple hay sheds this size rather than one large shed. This helps spread the risk and allows the sheds to safely have multiple uses. For example, one of these sheds could be used for machinery storage or concrete panels could be retrofitted to several bays of the shed and used for fertiliser storage.

There are other details to consider when building large-scale hay storage sheds, such as fire design. Our building consultants can advise whether this will be a requirement for your project, and we can include this in our scope of work.

You could also consider opting for 8.5-metre bay spacings to create a 24m (w) x 68m (L) x 7.5m (H) hay shed kit

Capacity

A 24m (W) x 64m (L) x 7.5m (H) hay shed stores approx. 3,640 big square bales.

Cost

A 24m (W) x 64m (L) x 7.5m (H) hay shed kit costs approx. $230,000 – $270,000 including GST.

This works out to be approx. $65 – $75 per bale.

Please note this indicative price is for a three-sided configuration and includes GST,  delivery, footing concrete and installation.

6. A 27m (W) x 42.5m (L) x 7.5m (H) Hay Shed Kit

This hay shed kit is one that utilizes the 27-metre standard size span, upsizing from the 24-metre standard size span.

The 27-metre span has become much more commonplace for hay sheds and machinery sheds as shed sizes and machinery sizes continue to generally get bigger.

The wider span combined with the 8.5-metre bay spacings makes this a spacious shed! It is a good mid-range hay storage option.

Capacity

A 27m (W) x 42.5m (L) x 7.5m (H) hay shed stores approx. 2,520 big square bales.

Cost

A 27m (W) x 42.5m (L) x 7.5m (H) hay shed kit costs approx. $185,000 – $215,000 including GST.

This works out to be approx. $75 – $85 per bale.

Please note this indicative price is for a three-sided configuration and includes GST,  delivery, footing concrete and installation.

7. A 27m (W) x 59.5m (L) x 7.5m (H) Hay Shed Kit

This is another 27-metre span option but with seven 8.5-metre bays.

While not as common as some of the other sizes on this list, if you require storage for around 3,500 bales then it would be worth considering this hay shed kit size.

It ticks a lot of the boxes with 8.5-metre bay spacings and bales can be stacked eight high

Capacity

A 27m (W) x 59.5m (L) x 7.5m (H) hay shed stores approx. 3,520 bales.

Cost

A 27m (W) x 59.5m (L) x 7.5m (H) hay shed kit costs approx. $245,000 – $285,000 including GST.

This works out to be approx. $70 – $80 per bale.

Please note this indicative price is for a three-sided configuration and includes GST,  delivery, footing concrete and installation.

8. A 27m (W) x 72m (L) x 7.5m Hay Shed Kit

This is an excellent large hay storage shed option with nine 8-metre-wide bays.

Or if you were considering using the shed for large machinery storage you could opt for eight 9-metre-wide bays.

Capacity

A 27m (W) x 72m (L) x 7.5m hay shed will store approx. 4,530 bales.

Cost

A 27m (W) x 72m (L) x 7.5m hay shed kit will cost approx. $295,000 – $335,000 including GST.

This works out to be approx. $65 – $75 per bale.

Please note this indicative price is for a three-sided configuration and includes GST, delivery, footing concrete and installation.

And finally, number nine!

9. A 30m (W) x 68m (L) x 8m (H) Hay Shed Kit

There are several details that make this hay shed size slightly different to the other options included on this list.

Firstly, there’s the 30-metre span width. This is the next standard size span up from 27 metres (the standard span sizes increase in 3-metre increments).

Secondly, there’s the height of 8 metres. This is commonly chosen by large hay processors and exporters.

Having said that it can work well for on-farm storage too.

Capacity

A 30m (W) x 68m (L) x 8m (H) hay shed stores approx. 4,410 bales.

Cost

A 30m (W) x 68m (L) x 8m (H) hay shed costs approx. $310,000 – $350,000 including GST.

This works out to be approx. $70 – $80 per bale.

Please note this indicative price is for a three-sided configuration and includes GST, delivery, footing concrete and installation.
